Bremer Bay

Our two nights at beautiful Bremer Bay were spent on the plush green lawns of the Bremer Bay Caravan Park, which was busy with other long-term travelers or "Big Lappers" as well as uni student holiday makers. Lots of kids and friendly adults to quench Hugh’s thirst for social interaction.

While there is a fish processing plant (not much more than a shed) in town, the real industry of Bremer Bay appears to be tourism, though it has a way to go to meet it's true potential. There are a lot of newly subdivided bush blocks, some with fancy new beach houses emerging, all with incredible views. We had a great dinner at the craft brewery on the hill which was one of the three dining options in town. There is one general store which must be raking it in given the monopoly it enjoys. I got the feeling there is a lot of room for growth and that it's coming soon.

An odd standout feature of the town was a wind turbine which sits atop a small hill behind the caravan park. It was awesomely exhilarating to stand right underneath it. But the constant whirr of it in the camp at night dampened the initial wow-factor.

We had one full day to explore the area which we filled with a morning at the mouth of the Wellstead Estuary with it’s sinking sands, warm shallow waters and fast flowing rivulets; and an afternoon bay/beach hopping around Point Henry. There were that many stunning beaches that no matter which way the wind was blowing, there would be at least one sheltered option. The holiday destination appeal was very apparent.
