Mason Bay
Oh my, Mason Bay! We drove here from our camp at Starvation Bay to play for the morning, but within 10 minutes of arriving Matthias was on his way back to pack up and shift camp.
I could stay here for a week! We’re nestled under Melaleuca trees, just back from the beach. I can hear the gentle wash of waves inside the lagoon as well as the low rumble of the larger waves that are breaking on the reef 500m off-shore. Wattle birds cackle and laugh in the trees and Hugh’s and Matthias' voices drift up from the sand while Claire sleeps silently at my feet. The palette of blue sea and sky is visible through the green grey silhouette of trees outside the open window of our camper. This is my new home.
Our five days at Mason Bay were totally low key. We played on the beach, pottered in rock pools, did a bit of snorkeling, bike riding on the sand and watched various other campers come and go. Apart from one day trip into nearby Hopetoun to restock supplies and so I could do a days work, it was nice just to stay put.
We had a few wild wildlife encounters including visitations from stingrays who cruised close to the shoreline, a night time scorpion sighting, a bee-sting and a too close for comfort meeting with a baby dugite (no more barefoot bike rides for Hugh).
Adding to Mason’s appeal, we were allowed to have campfires, even though most other places entered total fire ban on 1st November. We took the opportunity to introduce the kids to chocolate bananas cooked in the coals. Bananas will never be the same for them again!
Sadly it was on our way back from Mason Point that we dipped into mobile range and learned we would not be meeting Nanny and Joddy in Pemberton Friday week. Covid proving it still has a firm grip on our lives.
