Quobba Station
Next stop Quobba Station. This meant a return south and then back to the coast just before Carnarvon. Quobba was on our hit list for the blow holes and a good snorkeling spot dubbed the Aquarium. The station itself is not on the Ningaloo reef but does boast some very impressive red rocky coastal cliffs.
We reached the station on the first Saturday of the school holidays. The traffic heading north from Carnarvon belied what only a week earlier had felt like a remote stretch of highway. Every man and his dog were heading north for the winter. We were relieved to find Quobba Station itself was busy but not hectic and we had a nice two night stay, complete with much needed showers and laundry.
I was interested to learn that they run Damara sheep on the property, which have hair not wool and are live exported directly to Muslim markets. Apparently they're so popular they have been airfreighted out to Malaysia on occasion.
We drove only a short distance up the dramatic coastline to whistling rock then went down to the blow holes. The ocean was wild and put on a great display of force as it crashed over the mars-like cliffs. Conditions were far from ideal for the Aquarium but Matthias and Hugh were mad enough to brave it and reported seeing some good marine life.
Mouse tally now at 10, including one that drowned itself in our grey water bucket.
